In October of 2009, I completed my first published book. Entitled "Postcard History Series: Houston", the book details the history of my beloved hometown through the use of more than 200 postcard images. The book is a culmination of 15 years of collecting coupled with a keen interest in Houston's rich and diverse history.

The book is divided into 10 chapters and touches on such historical topics as early Houston architecture, disasters that changed the city's course of history, the rapid growth of downtown during the 1920s through the 1940s, and our hometown industries ranging from cotton and oil to NASA and Texas Medical Center. Other chapters include Houston's hotels & motels, civic buildings, neighborhoods, and recreational areas.

In writing this book, I wanted to capture a combination of the city's well-known and obscure history. Many of the postcards used in this book are considered hard-to-find and several are just downright rare in their condition. The postcard images themselves tend to do most of the "talking" but are nicely assisted by the 5-6 line vignettes that accompany them.

It has been a labor of love to create this body of work and I hope you'll find it as enjoyable to read as I found it enjoyable to write.

About The Book

Back Cover Text

Along the banks of Buffalo Bayou, Houston was founded by John and Augustus Allen on August 30, 1836. The city was named after Gen. Sam Houston, a prominent military hero of the Texas Revolution. After the Civil War ended, Houston flourished as agricultural, industrial, and commercial interests generated economic growth. In 1901, the discovery of oil at nearby Spindletop ushered in a new era, fueled by the addition of an inland port when the Houston Ship Channel was dredged in 1914. During the latter half of the 20th century, energy, space exploration, and the medical sciences placed this city on the world stage. Big dreams, big discoveries, hard work, and a little luck made Houston the thriving city it is today.

Daniel E. Monsanto is a Houston native and author. In this book, he recounts the growth of Texas's largest city by showcasing more than 200 vintage and modern postcards. From Houston's famous and forgotten landmark buildings and businesses to schools, churches, and hospitals, each chapter shows the evolution from small town to metropolis.
